Farm conservation will preserve agriculture use, protect sage-grouse habitat

Grand Junction Daily Sentinel April 15, 2025- A 213-acre farm southwest of Gunnison along the Silver Thread Scenic Byway has been permanently conserved for farming and to preserve wildlife habitat.

Ozyp Farms, a working sheep ranch, in partnership with Colorado West Land Trust and Gunnison Ranchlands Conservation Legacy, placed its property under a conservation easement, according to a press release. That easement ensures the continued use of the land for livestock grazing and small-scale commercial farming that contributes directly to the local food supply.

Matthew Ozyp is the owner of the farm, which also includes a greenhouse operation and outdoor growing that provides fresh vegetables and cut flowers to the Gunnison and Crested Butte communities through farmers’ markets, local restaurants and retail grocers.

“Every bit of what we grow is sold within 50 miles,” Ozyp said. “We want to keep our food local and support the community.”

In addition to the agricultural uses, the property also serves as key habitat for the federally threatened Gunnison sage-grouse by providing vital brood-rearing habitat, according to the release. It also offers winter range for bald eagles and ferruginous hawks, breeding ground for northern leopard frogs and essential corridors for big game species.

“I’m an avid hunter, and I see anywhere from 100 to 300 elk on my property every winter,” Ozyp said. “Preserving this land means ensuring these animals always have a place here.”

Ozyp practices regenerative agriculture and avoids chemical inputs such as pesticides and herbicides. It prioritizes soil health by planting native species and managing grazing to prevent overuse, according to the release.

“Ozyp Farms is a prime example of how conservation can harmonize agricultural production with the protection of critical wildlife habitat,” CWLT Conservation Specialist Nick Jacobson said. “By partnering with landowners like Matt Ozyp, we support agriculture while ensuring these lands continue to provide environmental and community benefits for generations to come.”

The conservation of Ozyp Farms also preserves viewsheds along the Silver Thread Scenic Byway, a popular route for both visitors and residents.

“Conservation is great,” Ozyp said. “I love that some of my favorite spots in this county are being protected. It’s nice to know these landscapes will always be here.
